OK, Don't throw the tomatoes, but I have never listened to a Zappa album in my life - never, ever. Now that I'm DONE spending money on gear, I need tunes. What 3 Zappa CDs would you recommend......Colin

Illuminati (13th Degree)
Freak Out
Absolutely Free
Roxy And Elsewhere
Joe's Garage

But they are all works of art; those are the more accessable examples.

See; that compilation thing; I'm not sure I agree with that philosophy. The albums seem to me to be unified works. So I think they should be approached that way; as a whole rather than split into pieces.
Plus too much of his radio airplay music is on that comp and not enough of his really creative music.
But thats just my opinion.

Yes, I understand what you mean - but Zappa is somewhat specific, jokes/comedy/parody...you get it or not.
"Greatist hits" can give you the information is it really for you, and then find the original albums, for example "We are only in it for the money"...

Colin,

I think I put my best thoughts in an old post, linked below. No tomatoes; happy listening!

E-Man; it looks like you listed pretty much every album he made there.
So yes; they are all great, can't go wrong with anyone of them really.
But Absolutely Free is my alltime favorite. I have the lyrics memorized.
