A PL to RCA connector can feed audio from the laptop to the home theater system. But I'm at a loss on how to feed the video to that system. What sort of connector is needed here?

Does your TV have a VGA input? You can probably connect it that way.

I connect my laptop to my TV with a VGA as Wayne said in his answer. I think that if your TV doesn't have a VGA input you can buy an adapter.
