I know that blu-ray movies are lauded for their improved graphic abilities, but with all that extra space for information on the discs, was there any way to improve sound quality than from what we already have with DVD's?

Most BluRay disks sound better, waaaaay better. The audio codec is actually up to the publisher, but in my experience, they almost always choose one of the high-def lossless formats. Night and day better sound.
