seems to me if they put a shorting ring in it, it wouldn't be an Alpha any more. They have other lines above (Magnum?) and some pro line speakers that have shorting rings. Alpha's a lower cost line.

I don't think Eminence will even make an Alpha 10 with a shorting ring. In fact, I asked them once a few years back if they would consider doing something similar, to make a high quality driver this size that had the same electro-mechanical parameters. It's a very useful driver for me, and I'd like to have an upgrade path. But Eminence flat out told me they weren't successful with their shorting rings, and soon after they abandoned the Magnum line.

Most piezo tweeters I've heard sounded pretty bad. The Motorola 1038/1041/1056 was an exception. When CTS bought the tooling and equipment to make them, I thought quality remained good. I'm not sure that is still the case, although I heard someone else eventually bought the tools from CTS.

As much as I though the Motorola tweeters were a good value, I think the speakers are much improved now with the Vifa tweeters. The DX25 is definitely better, smoother and more refined. When I first started making these speakers, there was no soft dome tweeter with the requires sensitivity. Now that the DX25 is available, I think it's a much better part to use for a speaker like this.

I tested some piezo horns in the late 70s and I have only heard one piezo that sounded right and it was not horn loaded, around 90 db. Parts express has a replacement for the 1038 and I was wondering about using it as a supertweeter. Thanks

Hey Matts , I agree with you on the shorting ring it wouldnt be a Alpha anymore. Just wondering why Eminence didnt copy JBL on their design.
