Got my 2Pi upgrade kits today. They're for an experiment Speakerman wants me to try: a pair of 12" Altec/University from his archives with the Vifa in a 4.5 cu ft sealed box. We figure if it has to be ported then it's just a matter of drilling another hole as there's no depth to the Tower port.
I was amazed to find the O.S. dimensions of the Tower yield 5.5 cu ft! But by the time the bracing, Hardi-Backer a la Bob Brines and drivers are installed it should be closer to 4.5.
Of course it has to stop raining on my alfresco workshop so I can build.

Sounds interesting. Do you have T/S specs?

Wayne and Bill,

My "woofer tester" is currently not running on the pc, but I had measured these back some time when everything worked with my woofer tester, and found out they are identical to the Altec 414 specs.

From my memory: fs= 30hz, qts = .35 eff = 96db Vas = fuzzy memory says 10 to 20 cubic ft.

Sorry I can't remember more than that. I do remember these measured same as Altec 414's as I measured the 414's and the (Altec/Utah???)'s at the same time and were identical. The 414's of course had cast frames and alnico magnets, the clones are (40 - 60 oz/ceramic) magnets, stamped frames.

I don't frequent the Altec website much anymore so unsure, I have become a JBL junkie!

The Altec 416 has very high Vas and so needs a very large box, between 6 and 18 cubic feet tuned to 30Hz. PiAlign suggests 8.5ft3 for the 416. The Altec 414 should be used in much smaller boxes, like 0.5ft3 to 2.0ft3 tuned to 60Hz. PiAlign suggests 1.5ft3 for the Altec 414.

Thanks Wayne,
Bill's cabinet is larger than that, but is also sealed(at least so far). It will be interesting to see the results Bill comes up with.
