They're (almost) done! I decided to upgrade my Studio 2 Pi Towers (again) by introducing the PSD2002 for HF. I'm running the pair of PSD2002 with H295 flares with the Alpha10 in the 2 Pi Tower cabinets. Crossovers are exactly like the Therm 3, with Zobel adjusted for the Alpha10.

How do they sound? WOW! The stock 2 Pi Towers were good, but this is in a different league. And as it should, consider this mod more than tripled the components cost of the stock 2 Towers.

I know some of you tried to steer me away from the H295, towards the H290 instead, but these sound just fine in my room. The horns are current sitting on top of the cabinet and I wouldn't be able to integrate them into the front baffle until Spring, when I can work outside.

Sounds cool, anxious to see pics. Wouldn't they look nice with some Martinelli wood horns...

Nothing to look at yet until the horns are in the baffle. Sure, I'd love a set of Bill's woodies. But for these towers, horns on top of the cabinet is way too high position-wise (and price too). I'm actually considering placing the horns below the woofer, instead of above, as it would be closer to ear level.

Pix yes. But not til Spring.

Grrovy, man. It really sounds like a pretty great set of speakers you've got there.

Same as the stock Towers. The 2002's were attenuated by 12db to match the Alpha 10's.

that is good... so you feel that even with the cross-over added and the compensation that the sound is that much better ?

hmmmm... now you have me thinking...

Garman... you have some Theater 4's also ?

I would describe it as more controlled and refined, compared to the stock Towers. Midrange is smoother, with less "shout", not that it was a big problem to start with.

Couple of things you do lose with the mod. There's less of that "sparkle" in the top end that you get with the piezo. Might be my choice of horn, CD vs Radial. I'm playing around with crossing the piezo back in at the 8K to 10K Hz mark as a super tweeter. There's also less of that "liveiness" that the stock Towers had. I think there's a lot to be said for simple or no crossover designs.

But overall, I think its a better speaker and worth the cost. And no, I've not heard the Theater 4Pi for comparison.

Oh yes, that liveness is the 2Pis greatest asset IMHO. I always recommend this model when cost is a factor and to lose that characteristic with a modification would have me wondering if I like it or not. But then there are other attributes that make a loudspeaker listenable, eh?!
