Wayne, which Pi speaker could I build with either the JBL 2118J or the 2123J?

the 2118J is 16 ohm 97 db

the 2123J is 16 ohm 101 db

I understand the 2123 is more of a midrange driver, but I have subwoofers so deep bass is not a concern.

Which tweeters could I use? Is there an opportunity here for a crossoverless design (the 2123, specially, falls off a cliff after 5K Hz)?

Thanks, Al Lau

Hi Al!

I really like the JBL 2123, much like the 2105 that I used for so many years in systems with 2205's.

I'm certain that the 2118 is an excellent part too, and you may find it to be similar to 2115's. I always loved those, and I think I may investigate the 2118 in this context. But I haven't yet, so I really can't form an opinion.

Check out the High Efficiency forum. There are some tips there. I haven't been able to track it down but one fellow there built a 2235/2118/2404 combo. The stock cross-over from the kit supplier had serious problems, but a revised version from Madisound modeled extremely well. I have a hard copy somewhere but I don't know if I have electronic. I will hunt around. This was a true three way, not a two way with woofer, though you can stretch the 2118 a bit. JBL had a model with dual 2118 drivers and a single 2404 a good number of years ago. Can't give you a model right now because my literature is packed away in a box somewhere.

If you want more info, holler, and I'll see what I can find.

Dan
