Is there a way to make a 16-ohm One Pi? Different drivers, redesigned crossover perhaps? Reason I ask is that I would like to try Bruce Rosenblit's (transcendentsound.com) new SET OTL (shipping in December 2003) which puts out a meager 1.5 watts at 8 ohms, but a whopping 3 watts at 16 ohms! (I am not affiliated at all with Transcendent.)

Neither the Eminence Alpha 8 or their Alpha 10 is available in 16 ohm variants. So those aren't options for one π or two π speakers, however, there are definitely some other excellent midwoofer choices. One of my favorite is the JBL 2115J, which was a 16 ohm version of an 8 inch speaker. If you can find a pair, snatch 'em up even if they need to be repaired. Reconing kits are still available with 16 ohm voice coils.

Thank you, Wayne! I see that the JBL 2115J is 92 db efficient. How about a 16 ohm 100 db efficient driver? Any such animal?

Hi,
Like you, I'm thinking about Transcendent's new class A OTL. I have no experience with 16 ohm pro drivers. How about a Pro 4 Pi using 16 ohm JBL 2226j or a Theater 4 using a Delta 15 16 ohm driver? Compression drivers are available too. My question is can three watts move a pro woofer very well? Please let us know what you decide to do. Maybe with a single tweeter you could wire two Alpha 8 or 10 in series

Sorry, don't know of one. Remember that voltage sensitivity goes down as impedance goes up.

If you are willing to go to a 15" driver, the JBL 2226J and older 2225J are both options. Clearly these will need to go with larger format horns. Don't be worried about pro-drivers needing more power; they don't. These are extremely efficient with powerful motors. Jamminjersey has used 2235Js for $300/pr. You will want to work with alignments a bit. These are not the extremely low QTS drivers that some of the highest efficiency drivers, such as the 2220J (.17 but 101.5 db) are, but they will still tend to roll off a little early. Given natural room reinforcement, a little lower tuning can work well for you, especially since you won't have to worry in the slightest about exceeding xmax in the octave above fb.
