Do I need to make the the seal around the drivers air tight on a ported center channel speaker? If so what is a good way to seal them to the box, without using the nasty black putty.

I usually feel around the driver for busts of air during large woofer excursions, and I don't apply a sealer if no air leaks are felt. This usually works if the drivers you use have gaskets already and your holes are cut so that there is some surface area between the driver and the baffle.
