My friend wants to build a cheaply priced HT system.

I am suggesting she use her PC as a source and processor with the suitable software such as the open source media centre. I wanted to know if there was a 5 channel digital amp along the lines of a Sonic Impact that could be used to power speakers?

Any advice would be great! Thanks

There are a handful of multi-channel digital amps on the market, but most are ridiculously expensive, especially given the low-cost of their underlying technology. If you want to make an inexpensive home theater with Tripath amps, best to grab a few stereo T-amps from your favorite vendor (Sonic Impact, Trends Audio, etc.) and use them as building blocks to build-up the number of channels you need.

Are you recommending to use more than one amp? Is that going to sound bad in any way?

Actually, it's better because you have more power supplies, and each are separate so isolation is good between channels. The best high-end gear uses monoblock amplifiers, which are single channel amps. Use one per channel, so stereo takes two monoblocks, five channel takes five, etc.

IF you up your monoblocks do you up the quality of the stereo?
