The Digital forum doesn't seem to have any posts, so I'm
asking it where there's some readers.

What kind of soundcard do you use?

Mine's Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.

What I've found after looking a bit was that alternatives
to Creative Labs in the $40- $60 range is almost non existent.
A couple of off brands available at the online merchants but
few brand names.

Turtle Beach Not found. Hercules Digifire 7.1 not found.

I'm also running a Santa Cruz. Works fine for speaker testing, streaming audio and CD played through computer monitors.

Thinking this one step farther, I'd like to change my roadshow system to a laptop, an external hard drive and an external sound card. The sound card doesn't have to be SOTA, just adequate for 2-channel speaker demo's.

Hi Bob,

Are you talking about a breakout box when you say
external sound card?

FYI there's a Hercules Game Theater at Ebay that's
at $20. Hercules Game Theater is a 3 piece rig:
soundcard, cable, breakout box and it runs the same
chipset and is comparable to the Santa Cruz. Hercules also
has an upscale device in it's dj series for mixing etc.
"in the field."

OTOH what you get with some of the higher end cards is
a cable with a number of pigtails on it for doing extensive
plugging and unplugging.

I found the link below yesterday. I gives an overview
of product. A bit pricey but it shows the kind of thing
available.

Actually, all I want from an external sound card is one-for-one replacement of the embedded chip in the laptop. All it needs to be is a 2-channel in, 2-channel out. All of the embedded chips I know of are one, too noisy, and two, roll off too early at both ends. But I don't need a multi-channel mixer or high-end game interface. Just 2-channel music.

Thanks for the link.

Do you have a preference to any of these breakout boxes?
I need to get one with 8-12 inputs.

8-12 inputs would require a mixer board.

Here's a recommendation from Dave Phillips who has a
book on PC sound for the Linux world:

Yamaha DMP11 or an item from Mackie.

Bill, I have been wanting to set up home studio components for
quite a while but I haven't gone beyond some crude (but
efficient) speaker building.

The Fitzmaurice forum has a lot of musicians in it.
They may know a good direction to go if you tell them what
you want to do.

Whelp,

The card will have to be on a bus. mOst of the breakout
box packages have three components: card, wire, box.

Have you checked into the lunchbox size computers?
