I would like to check for this without damaging the ribbons on the array I have. What was your method.

I've tested quite a few of the Founteks and never had this problem.

The only reliable way is to run an impulse response with measurement equipment.

NEVER use a battery to test the polarity of a true ribbon! You can damage the ribbon element.
