Hello,

I have finished a project of column based upon Martin's design rules.
I was using the Fostex FE127e and was not happy with the result.
I have since replaced the FE127e by the FX120 since it could fit the existing design.
The Fe127e lacked control resulting into some bluring.
Yes the FX120 is much more expensive but the sound is cristal clear instead.

The box design or its practical construction are not to blame, the issue was actually related to the Fe127e.

Would anyone have similar unsatisfactory experience with the Fe127e?

I think that the limited displacement amplitude of the Fe127e is the origin of the problem. Could someone comments on this.

Regards, Jacques Candé

Greets!

FX120 = 2 mm Xmax/~311 Hz mass corner, FE127E = 0.35 mm/~326 Hz, so it seems reasonable that this is the primary cause. Just another example of 'you get what you pay for'.

Hi Jacques,

Recently, on a different forum, I read a similar comment about the FE-127E driver. I don't remember where I read this or what the outcome was but I was surprised since most Fostex drivers are very high quality units for the price. If I run into the post again I will let you know.

Well I'm quite happy with the MLTL for the FE127.

Am I supposed to be _un_happy now?

Just an upgrade question: Can the FE120's be substituted
as an upgrade path? Anything that's an easy mod is worth
a try. I'll have to get out my Madisound catalog.

Greets!

I don't see why. Anyway, it's a plenty 'close enough' drop in replacement except you'll have to enlarge the mounting hole a little.

I made a reply here but see that it didn't get through.

The price of the 120's put me off. My mltl's from your
specs are performing very nicely until next upgrade of the
FE127 catches me.

I'd like to try the 'vtl' some day-- that one with the internal
line that looks like a variation on the Jordan vtl.
