Sorry, don't have time to go digging right now.

JIm,
My guess is it sounds pretty good. If you see the frequency curve, it looks awful, but the sound is probably pretty good. Then again, the frequency curve on my homemades looks pretty bad too, but the sound is fine! Maybe not hifidelity, but very enjoyable.

Thanks, Dave,

Very interesting use for that part, eh? I presume you recognize it.

Steve is a master of Carverian technical exposition.

Best regards,

Poinz

Poinz,

I have one almost identical to it, but mine isn't on my speakers, but rather in my tool box. Years back I was a motorcycle mechanic, thus I recognized the "phase plug" right off.

The funny thing is that if he'd just STFU one sentence earlier, and not mentioned the square opening, I'd have never seen it.  I would think that probably the carefully-arrived-at length is coincidentally that of the, ah, phase plug with the rounded rim ground flat.

It's actually (like much of what Steve does) a really good idea; high mass, sticks to the pole piece really well as-is, extends and linearizes the magnetic circuit, looks nice, readily available, comes in sizes to fit any pole piece, the cheap part actually preferable (lower steel, no trademark).  Steve is not a dumb guy.  My only problem, as with any phase plug, is that I love my FE168Σ's so much I can't bear to take the X-acto to them.

Whatcha working on?

Don't ya just love a guy that isn't afraid to take a Exacto Knife to a brand new set of drivers? And only God knows how many pairs are piled up on the work bench trashed? But what balances out thsi search for great hi-fi see studying the graphs---but still listening to the sound! Critical listening is still a very valid instrument! JD
