Since I first suggested the Altec 811b horns, I have purchased two pair on ebay without difficulty. One pair was a VERY new looking Heathkit 811b pair.

I don't see any difficulty in buying these.

Less than 700 each? Not too bad providing everything works. A little paint, and you're jammin.

The shipper screwed up and shipped them on a small pallet and splintered the bottoms, oh well. They work good, no low bass or upper highs, but are ok. Question is, the horns have no obvious polarity markings. The terminals are on top. Looking from the back at the driver, which side is positive and negative? thanks for the replies!

Look for a notch in response [message #19050 is a reply to message #19049] Tue, 30 January 2007 09:23 Go to previous messageGo to next message

Do you have access to any measurement equipment where you can look for a notch in response from out-of-phase signals? If not, maybe download Speaker Workshop. If the tweeter is miswired, you'll see a notch in response somewhere within an octave of the crossover frequency.

Terminals are marked "1" and "2" [message #19051 is a reply to message #19050] Tue, 30 January 2007 16:47 Go to previous messageGo to previous message

Altec used this to determine polarity.

I believe(from memory only) that termnal "2" is positive and "1" is negative for a positive waveform exiting the horn mouth.
