i just bought a sony PS-X45 turntable from a friend of a friend and when i hook it up, even if i turn the volume up very high, i can barely hear it over the speakers. any clues?

Are you plugging the turn table into a phono input or an aux input? If the later, then you will need to get a phono preamp.....Colin
