Distortion --mistracking or damaged LP? [message #13221]

I recently purchased a used LP that sounds fairly distorted throughout the album, allthough it looks almost brand new. Is there a way to determine if I am mistracking or is it caused by previous damage? It doesnt crackle or anything, but the distortion wont seem to improve after much adjustment...any thoughts??

If it's just that one album, I'd say it was probably played a lot with a damaged needle or misadjusted tone arm.

I have a few LP's that are distorted right out of the box. Bad pressings. These usually get worse toward the center of the disc where the grooves are squeezed together more.
