I was looking at using a Hammond PT for this amp. Are the 300 series worth the extra money over the 200 series, especially since this will be my first build? I realize better iron will yield better results. I know I'm not wanting to spend a lot on this first one and will probably go with Edcor OPT's as opposed to the 125E's from Hammond. Did score some 25uF ASC motor runs as a start.

Hey-Hey!!!,
I would suggest that they are. The 120 v. 115 volt rating on the primary is enough for me. The 300's are labeled 120. That lowers the likelyhood of a TX humming. They are bigger cored as well. All in all, as I hate buzzing or hot Iron, I would buy the 300 series.
cheers,
Douglas

I've heard that the 300 series are less prone to humming, but as a first project I didn't know if it's be worth. But if I'm going to spend any money it ought to be on the iron. I've also heard that if you do the 6EM7 right it is a very, very nice sounding amp! So like a 300FX 275-0-275V, 150mA would be about right I think.

Thanks Douglas!

hey-Hey!!!
There is of course the benefit of having a really beefy PS. Some of the more important improvements came when I put in a substantial PS in place of a prelim or experimental unit.

It is a bit of extra money, but if this were about money, we'd be listening to epods with $1.99 earbuds. Now I am not suggesting spending money for the Hell of it. One can spend it wisely, or one can spend it foolishly. Good Iron is not on my list of foolish just yet( but I do have to do some of the work in order not to pay retail ).
cheers,
Douglas
