For those who are old enough to know, which songs were among the best during the 70s, and do you still listen to these oldies on the radio?

I still listen to these oldies on the radio whenever I'm lucky enough to find a good station with them. Ugh, tough question otherwise though! Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steve Miller Band, Chairmen of the Board, and Tom Petty are some of the greats but there are just too many.

I wasn't alive in the 70s but I can still tell you what I consider the "classics" from that age and still listen to them now. These are the first to come to mind but I'm sure I'd have different answers if you asked me tomorrow:

Tiny Dancer - Elton John
Last Dance with Mary Jane - Tom Petty
Play that Funky Music - Wild Cherry
(Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult

I hear what you're saying. There really are just too many great songs from the '70s to be able to choose just a few top ones. It's great that even the younger generation appreciates the music from that era.

I think it's interesting that the '70s has the music that seems to transcend through the generations the most. I wonder why that is. Is it simply because the music is that much better than that of other generations? That seems like too simple and too vague of an answer. Is it because that generation still has a hand in the media and has managed to stay on top of technology?

I believe the music was made at a time when the world was going through some serious changes, and that's why it's so powerful. I could be wrong, though, but there has to be some explanation for that phenomenon, right?

It could be that, Stephan, or it could just be that since one decade had to be better than others, it was that one. I think it's just mere coincidence that the music from the 1970s is considered the best.

I wasn't alive in the 1970s, so this question isn't wholly applicable to me. However, I hear music from this era all the time. It's funny - I was looking at Billboard's Top 20 from the 1970s list (found here), and while I've heard of a lot of the songs, I don't hear them often.

How many of these songs do you all listen to today? I'm going to bold the ones that I hear pretty regularly.

For me it was Elton John and the Stones. I still think Goats Head Soup was one of the more underrated albums of the 70's.

But why the longevity for most 70's music? Rock N Roll started in the 50's so the music and lyrics were still very basic. In the 60's they progressed and some bands really experimented with different sounds and styles. By the time the 70's got here, artists and bands had perfected the simplicity of the 50's and the experimentation of the 60's to get a more refined, polished and professional sound. The lyrics too had been more polished into a more personal experience for the listener.

I am biased though, because 70's music is what I started on.
