I'm wondering if one of these would work nicely for amplifying my electric bass. Good idea, or not such a good idea?

It would work just fine. I'm not sure you really need the compression horn though - Might be just as well omitting the crossover and leaving it off.

I built a similar cabinet for a buddy's electric bass with a JBL 15"
He had to eq the midrange (400hz - 2k or so) down a bit because the driver was almost ruler flat all the way to 3k but he really liked the sound and no need for a tweeter.
