The amps and speakers in TVs are generally worthless, but the tuning gear is usually adequate. Just make sure the TV has line level audio outputs that you can send to a 5.1/7.1 receiver. Digital outs are even better (if you have a receiver that can use them).

I have been thinking about this lately.

If you used the standard tv out jacks to a low power
amp (like a gainclone or the item shown in my link) plus
some high efficiency speaks in a good horn rig, would that
work for someone who just wanted good tv sound?

Hi Lon,

All that talk about chip amps over in the Semiconductor forum made me want to get down some of the chips I have an build a little amp. They do sound good, and are incredibly easy to build. Like Gnational said, all you really have to do is hook up power to 'em. I have a ton of those chips of various power levels from car stereos and what not over the years. I remember looking at the tech sheets that came with the chips and seeing that they didn't need much at all, but I still put 'em in my parts bin for "later." So I'm thinking I should dig through there and see what I have.

Anything is better than a TVs built in speakers, but once you've heard even regular broadcast TV in 5.1 or 7.1 you won't be satisfied with anything less. 5.1/7.1 receivers today are so cheap there's no logical reason not to go for one.

My home theatre would be considered a joke by most
observers. :-)

So I've tried to concentrate on minimal hardware of
all kinds tuned to the best they can be.

Near as I can tell in a one to one comparison with
my PVC Boomtoobz of about 8.5 ft length and a single
Radio Shack RS 40-1197 up against my first line array
sample build, The Toobz (tell me if this is the same spelling as
the pop band) beat the line array. But the build is not complete.

The ol' Best Buy has a 5.1 SS that keeps coming down
in price and will maybe bottom out at $79.

Today I am wondering where my post on Sonotubes went.

I'm reposting that because it has a lot of cool stuff
in it you can make on the cheap... aside from the Shiva drivers.
