I suspect the damage would be the same at equal levels, but those levels would be easier to achieve at the ear drum with buds. Anyway, the "cringe factor" is higher for earbuds. I hate things in my ears - that goes for hearing aids, they all make me "cringe". -Dick
Ear buds tend to to get a better sound because it practically sits inside you ear. Close the ear than earpad headphones. Also all other sounds will be harder to hear, you will only hear the music with ear buds.
Ear buds will provide you with more complete sound and less ambient interruption, but you will pay a price for that in the end. There is a much greater probability of hearing loss.
Because of the size, earbud is more convenient to use than earpad.
It's dangerous to our ears if you'll expose yourself to loud volumes. Earpad is bigger in size that's why I hate using it. Speaking of the sounds, earbud is better. It produces clear and not noisy sound.
The only thing to remember about earbuds is you have a very hard time hearing outside sounds. That's either a plus or a minus depending upon your point of view.
As much as I hate earbuds I have to admit the ones for the iphone (that come with it) are fairly easy to use and kind of comfy. Its still odd having something in my ear, but they fit better than any others I have tried.
Earbuds are usually small in ear headphones. I am not quite sure if they include standard non in ear headphones however. Earpads typically do not enter your ear and form a 'pad' on top of your ear. These typically cause less ear damage but more external noise so that other people can be hindered by your music.
