Via Metafilter, the site linked below contains a treasure trove of information about old phonographs and records. The article recounting how the author went about "Buying Rare Race Records In The South" in the early 1960s is particularly delightful.

Man I wish I picked up all those mint condition 78's in the Salvation Army 15 yrs. ago. People left them by the pound.
