I was told JBL speakers connect [+] black and [-] red. Is this true?
I guess that is ok if you use all JBL but if you mix brands your in trouble.

Reversing the polarity should be a simple matter. Back in the day current was thought to be + to - ,infact its not. Electron flow is from -ve to +ve

But alotof things this wont effect aslong aslong you keep using the same arbitrary value.
