As a mainly analog person, it is that time I dread the most: having to get a new CD player. On the basis of limited exposure, I'm interested in the 47 labs Shigaraki transport/DAC combination at the moment. Any other suggestions for the best cd player out there for approximately $3K US or less?

Before spending large coin you might want to give the Art DI/O a try.
You can use a lot of lesser expensive cd decks as a transport as long as it has a coax digital out. The Art DAC has a tube in it and has a few fine tune adjustments.
This is just an unbelievable DAC for 125.00

Also take a look at the Audio Note CD player and DAC combo.

HI Peter,
I would try a transport for around $1000 with a DAC for the remainder. For that money you can buy many dacs, and audiotion.
Here are some examples:
1. Ack! Dac
2. Scott Nixon Tubedac+
3. Museatex bitstream
4. Museatex bidat
5. Benchmark dac-1
6. ECD1 by electrocompaniet
7. Classe dac-1 (used)
8. Blue note Ag dac
9. Muse dacs

And many many more. I suspect all of these would sound better than a standalone CD player, as long as they had jitter reduction (many of these dacs do already, for others you can buy a jitter reducer ).
hope this helps
thanx
