We all know that not all cars leave the factory with a flawless car stereo, hence the need for improvement arises at some point. At this point, cost becomes an issue and most people (myself included) often want to operate within a modest budget. In my view, it probably starts with purchasing an in-dash radio followed by decent speakers.
What's the least amount that you've spent on this?

Hi, the last one I replaced was years ago. I put in a Sony AM/FM/CD and upgraded the speakers with some from Pioneer. It was about $250 then. Since that time the gear that came with the last 4 vehicles (oldest one was a 1999) has been just fine. Check Crutchfield for some newer gear...but be prepared for sticker shock.
I have a car that has 280k miles on it and the stereo went kapuut about 2 weeks ago. Crutchfield is out of the question. I think a Sony type brand would do just fine.
Crutchfield is way out of my league too. Even though I haven't done it myself, the most I could spend on car gear would be $200. I love the speakers from Pioneer.

Hi, The obvious next choice is Amazon. They carry stuff from many vendors. Walmart has some and places like AutoZone do to. On line from Frys Electronics as well.
I value good sound and if at all I was to modify/change my car radio, I wouldn't set a limit of how much I would be willing to spend. Getting good sound is costly but you can end up using such a set-up for a long time.
