How big of a deal is it to have speakers inside of a cabinet? They're enclosed with metal grating over most of the door. I don't think it sounds too bad personally, but I'm wondering if I should try and refigure our setup.

Can you elaborate more on how your speakers are set up? Are the speakers inside the cabinet or just on top of it? If it is inside the cabinet with clothes, then I assume that the clothes will absorb the sound and you won't get a good sound. If I were you, I will mount my speaker not on a cabinet but on the wall.

I feel like trial and error have really helped me on my way to getting the best possible setup and acoustics for my liking and my spaces. Try different placements in and outside of the cabinet to see what sounds better to you. Personally, I don't like obstruction for my speakers.
