We have a kid so the only time we can watch a good movie (you know... one that isn't kid-friendly) is after she goes to bed. That's great except for when we try to watch a movie with what I'd call 'odd' sound settings. It's like you either can't hear speech or the music/sound effects are deafening, which we can't have because we don't want to wake our daughter. Is there a fix for this???

Are you running a center channel? Usually, when I hear this complaint, it's where a center channel is not used and the R/L mains aren't able to reproduce a realistic phantom center. That's a pretty common problem. Another is when the center channel is being used, but it's a nasty little sound bar or some other substandard configuration.
