Can anyone explain, exactly, what the difference is between FM radio and AM radio? I know AM signals are not quite as strong as FM signals, but I don't really know why.

The signal is modulated (or altered) differently. FM is frequency modulation, while AM is amplitude modulation. FM is less affected by weather and can be broadcast in stereo, while weather disrupts AM quite easily and it's in mono. AM can be heard at a greater range, though, if the signal refracts off the atmosphere.

I have always wondered why talk radio tends to be on AM while music is on FM. The mono limitation of AM explains that though.
