Back in the days of self denial when I was dating my ex, he had a set up where he could connect his mp3 player to the cassette player of the car. Does anyone know what this is called?

Hi, There are several ways this can be done. Many newer car stereos have direct inputs for things like iPods, others have audio input connections for pretty much any kind of player, often a mini-earphone type jack. Others have USB (like in a PC) connectors. Some take the mini-chips directly. There are many possibilities. An old school way is with an external device that is actually a small FM transmitter. You plug your player into it and it sends a signal to your FM radio. Some use batteries and some plug into the 12 volt outlets of the vehicle. These are OK, but not super and will work. They are rather inexpensive typically about $25.
It is probably a direct input that is available in newer types of cars. Mine has one, and I love it. I must say, that I use it nearly every day. It's definitely a great thing to have!

Actually, his car was pretty old. It looked like this think that looked like a cassette tape was connected to his mp3 player. It seems pretty nifty. My car is pretty old, and I would like to listen to something other than brainwashing radio music every day.

This looks almost exactly like what he had! I hate the thought that I am utilizing his idea for using the mp3 player in the car, but I REALLY wanted to listen to Kimbra in the car once in a while. Thank you very much!
I remember cassette adapters! It's been awhile since I've had a car that had a cassette deck, though, so that option has been out for me for awhile. Luckily the car I bought a couple years ago has a direct 1/8" input.

Your lucky, Chicken! While I love and adore my darling car, it is pretty old and I still have a cassette tape deck. I am looking into getting a CD player at some point, but I think that would deface my car.

Just to follow up, I discovered that I could get this adapter at a music store- one that I seldom visit because of my busy schedule- for a rather affordable price! I really appreciate you help!
