I am looking at the Alesis USB Studio Drum kit. It is in my price range and something I can use to work on my drumming skills. I like that they use real drum heads but I am concerned that it will sound too electronic.

You should be able to get sounds for it that are not too electronic sounding at all these days. By virtue of the lack of actual through the air acoustics that you will run across, you will not ever exactly get a full acoustic sound, but you'll be able to get pretty close and depending on what you're doing, it can actually sound pretty slick.
