I hooked up my dvd player with surround sound. The surround only works when I'm playing a dvd, not while watching tv. Do you think that it has something to do with my pvr?

You have to hook an RCA cable from the TV to the amplifier then manually go into the TV setup and tell it to output the signal to the Output Channel rather than the speakers. You are usually given the option to select whether to keep the volume static at line level or make it adjustable form the TV for passive external speakers.

Beyond the matter of actually connecting the audio outputs to amplifiers and speakers, very few television programs provide audio tracks with surround information. They usually only provide two-channel sound.

Wayne makes a good point. We have all our audio going to our 7.1 system instead of TV speakers, but most of the time it just comes out of the front two anyway.
