Wayne,
After LSAF in 2008, before I moved back to CA, I enjoyed
John Busch's Altec 605 open baffles, and have since made
a pair for myself. While I realize they come up short on
a couple of your criteria, particularly with the midwoof
being asked to go to high, and with the little tweeter horn
being too small to go low enough, I thought it might be
interesting to kick around a possible three way design.
If you mounted the coax (in this case Altec 604C's) in
a bass-reflex cabinet with a modestly sloping front and
coax close to the top, you could put one of your midhorns
just above it, crossing the midwoof and the horn at
around 400 hz, and the midhorn and the compression
driver in the coax at about 2k. I would imagine the
timing at 400 hz would not be an issue, but the
HF crossover would need to deal with issue though
the Altec compression driver in the coaxes is quite
a ways back.
Any thoughts?
