Is there a surround tuner /processor built out there?
I'd like to use my own amps and avoid using the ones in the reciever.

TIA
Jorge

Most of the British HiFi companies make one, but unfortunately, they tend to cost more than a complete receiver. Another option is to purchase a HT receiver with pre-out. Yamaha receivers have this feature starting with their RXV650 model ($550 MSRP) and continues on up to their flagship.

Seems crazy ; take the power amps out and shrink the supply ,double the price!

Surround sound is not a high priority for me, but it is a lot of fun for movies (particularly with a subwoofer!). When I looked for a low-price processor (to use with all my old ss amps), I wound up getting an Outlaw Audio 950 processor. It appears that, at the moment, there are b-stock units on sale for $649.
