To most, Memorial Day is nothing more than a three-day weekend marking the beginning of summer. Recently, however, I stumbled across a description of what may have been the first of the memorial ceremonies at the end of the Civil War that eventually coalesced into Memorial Day, in which the freed blacks of Charleston, South Carolina honored dead Union soldiers. It's a beautiful and poignant story that captures why we should appreciate the holiday as something more than just an opportunity to turn on the barbecue.
