. . . plans. Do the 4 Pi speakers not need it? The plans seem almost too simple (I mean this in a good way). I wasn't expecting that. I did a search on bracing but got over 20,000 results. That's why I am asking.

It is a simple layout, and the bracing is simple too. I don't show bracing in any of my plans and instead leave it to the builder with the instructions "brace at least every 18 inches". You'll see that on the "General Notes" page.
Where I brace them is right in between the woofer and tweeter, and I use a cross-brace. That ties the front and back together, which is the most important panels to brace. It also ties the sides together. You could add a diagonal to the top and bottom, but I don't find it necessary. The most important panel to preload is the back.
I've made them with good 3/4" plywood, tho, w/out bracing and haven't felt any need to add it. That's using them with small SET's, and no large power input.
How do you think dowels would work connecting the front and back and sides together? I'm also thinking about the Blackhole damping system or Soundcoat.

Dowels would be fine if they're strong enough, like maybe 1" diameter dowels. But you could also use rectangular pieces which make it easy to glue them together in the middle. Lots of surface area for adhesive where the two brace pieces meet.

I've made 'em that way too. They're not so large that the panels resonate audibly, even without bracing. I don't see any difference in far-field anechoic measurements with or without braces, but they're easy to add so I install them anyway.
