So I'm looking at the curves for the Alpha 10 and the Vifa tweeter in the 2pi Studio and Note that the Aplha 10 has an 8 ohm impedance and the tweeter has a 4 ohm nominal. I'm confused as to why there is a difference in impedances. What is happening electrically and why? Does this somehow induce a taper in the upper frequencies?

That's right. System impedance will drop gradually from 8Ω to 4Ω above 1kHz. It also has some slight peaks in the bottom octave due to system resonance. All in all, the two π speaker has a benign impedance curve and is a very easy load for an amplifier to drive.
