Hoffman's Iron Law
…
I'd say this falls into the realm of "Hoffman's Iron Law". First formulated back in the early 1960's by Anthony Hoffman (the H in KLH), Hoffman's Iron Law is a mathematical formula that was later refined by Thiele and Small, whose work now …

Hoffman's Iron Law
…
Hoffman's Iron Law states that the efficiency of a woofer system is directly proportional to its cabinet volume and the cube of its cutoff frequency. What this means is the most powerful subwoofer systems are necessarily large. You can probably match …

Extended bass response from small cabinets
…it also be efficient? The answer is no. Hoffman's Iron Law states you can have low cutoff, high efficiency or small size but not all three. This isn't just a rule of thumb, it's actually a characterization based on physics. Hoffman's Iron Law is a …

You're so right. Hoffman's "Iron Law" (the one that says you can have two of three: deep bass, small size or efficiency) actually was a precursor to Thiele and Small's work. It's not just a seat of the pants thing, it's actually a …

Re: Mix And Match
…haven't heard of Hoffman's Iron Law before and I'm only semi-understanding it, but that's good to know and I'm looking forward to reading more about it. I thought that smaller speakers might be just as functional as the larger ones since that's the trend …

Re: Mix And Match
Where speakers are concerned, bigger is better. Smaller is better for convenience only.
Some things can be miniaturized without penalty, but speakers aren't one of them.
See Hoffman's Iron Law.

Want small size and deep bass extension? No problem but you must sacrifice efficiency. If you want high efficiency and deep bass extension, then you'll need a big box. Need high …

Re: Will they get smaller?
…s, and has been mathematically quantified in Hoffman's Iron Law and Thiele/Small analysis.
The physics of a electro-mechanico-acoustic device dictate that it can be made small only if efficiency and/or bass extension are sacrificed.
So you can make …
