Re: Mix And Match
I haven't heard of Hoffman's Iron Law before and I'm only semi-understanding it, but that's good to know and I'm looking forward to reading more about it. I thought that smaller speakers might be just as functional as the larger ones since that's the trend...

Re: Mix And Match
Where speakers are concerned, bigger is better. Smaller is better for convenience only.
Some things can be miniaturized without penalty, but speakers aren't one of them.
See Hoffman's Iron Law.

Re: Size of the speakers
The size of the speaker matters with respect to efficiency and/or bass extension. When designing a speaker, you can choose to optimize any two of three variables: 1 - Small size, 2 - Bass extension and 3 - Efficiency. This is called "Hoffman's Ir...

Re: Will they get smaller?
You're right, John. It's physics, and has been mathematically quantified in Hoffman's Iron Law and Thiele/Small analysis.
The physics of a electro-mechanico-acoustic device dictate that it can be made small only if efficiency and/or bass extension ar...

Re: How much are speakers shrinking?
Bigger is better!
Seriously, where speakers are concerned, bigger truly is better. Hoffman's Iron Law states that you can have any two of the following: small size, deep bass or high efficiency. You can optimize any two, but not all three. So if the s...

Re: An advanced replacement
Thanks for this Wayne; I had no idea there was some science behind it. I love bass in my speakers so I don't think there's any need to think of any other replacement.

Re: Getting that "big speaker" sound
My opinion:
No, you can't get big sound out of a small speaker. And yes, bigger is better.
Actually, it isn't an opinion. It's fact, described first as "Hoffman's Iron Law" and then later quantified by Neville Thiele and Richard Small i...

Re: Tuning below Fs with JBL 2226H?
The JBL 2226H is one of my all-time favorite midwoofers. And it is capable of producing subwoofer output too, but it is not optimized for that purpose. Most of the things that make it great - its motor structure with shorting rings, it's highly damped ...
