Re: Acoustic calculators
I've used CARA, and found it helpful. The main thing I was hoping to do was to model different configurations and see room modes and energy distribution in the modal region. It does a great job of that.

Re: Flanking Subs vs Helper Woofers
I used it a lot back in those early multisub simulation days. But I started to see a trend, which was that once I had four subs, I could put them in several places and get good response. Geddes and Welti agreed, so that became sort of a "take away...

Re: Subwoofers vs budget... where do you draw the line?
If I have DI-matched two-way speakers, I always start with flanking subs. I mean, you can run the speakers with no subs at all if you're making an apartment system or something like that, but if we're talking stepping up a notch or two, start with flank...

Re: How do I keep deep bass from the neighbors?
Thanks Wayne, you're always helpful. The best situation I had was at my last house. I had my equipment in a basement. It had the usual heavy concrete walls, with framing, and it was 12' underground. The only people likely to complain would be people on ...

Multisubs
I like to use CARA to model the room and speaker positions. It gives a pretty good indication where in the room the sound field is most uniform. Put the subs where the sound field looks best, especially in the listening area. As for the use of param...

Re: Where To Learn More?
I suggest CARA. There are online room calculators, but they only show the frequencies where standing waves are produced, not the positions of the nulls and peaks. At low frequencies, i.e. first axial mode, they line up pretty evenly. But above that, s...

Re: Subwoofers
Two subs are definitely better than one. I wouldn't suggest driving them with tubes. You could, but I think it's a waste. Wrong tool for the job, in my opinion. Use tubes for mains, solid state for subs. Use plate amps for the subs or press an old...
