Oh, that sounds frustrating! I’m not an expert, but from what I’ve read, crackling and distortion can come from a few things. It could be the receiver, especially if both speakers started acting up at the same time. But it might also be the wiring, loose connections, or even the speaker components themselves. I’d probably check all the cables and connections first, and if those are fine, then look into the receiver. Sometimes just cleaning the contacts can help too.
