Streaming does have a practical purpose and I don't think many purists are too upset about it.
I remember driving through New Mexico many years ago, and the static on the AM band would go in and out with the same station, then fade to another, etc... It's kind of a mesmerizing thing on an empty highway through the badlands down there at two in the morning.
