Let me expound on the issue with the center channel. My expertise is loudspeakers.
You can get great sound without a center channel speaker. When the left and right mains generate relatively constant directivity and they are are setup where their forward axes cross in front of the listening position, they make a fantastic phantom center. This is the holy grail of stereo, and it makes a very good impression of realism even without a center channel speaker.
That said, it's better to also have a center channel speaker if it doesn't require a compromised loudspeaker configuration. That means having a center channel speaker that matches the left/right mains.
