Flanking subs need to be capable of smooth output up into the lower midrange. It's just as important that they be they be faithful at medium-range frequencies as low. So they're called to take on more than just subwoofer duty. As for traditional subs or distributed multisubs - as long as crossover is kept below ~80Hz or so - then all you need is good clean bass.
