Flanking subs are stereo pairs, one for each main. So you really want them to be matched, e.g. a pair of three π subs or a pair of Genelecs or a pair of Daytons. If you can't have a matched pair, I would be worried that the balance would be off.

More distant subs don't have to be matched though. For the distributed multisubs, you can run the same model as the flanking subs, but they don't have to be.
