If it's less than an hour, I just hang out and wait. But when it gets much past that, I get out the generator and fire it up. I have a generator that can run my whole house. It doesn't automatically switch to backup power though, so I have to shut off the breakers (to remove my house from the grid) and connect the generator. Runs about ten hours on a tank.
