The need for a center channel depends on the arrangement of your room and the number of listeners. If the main speakers will be much further separated compared to the distance to the primary listening position or listeners will be substantially to either side of the screen, a center channel will help provide a more stable image. A center is only being used in my case because of off-axis listeners and the relatively large size of the screen. The 6 Pis produce a solid and stable center image at my primary listening position. The 3 Pi matches very well tonally, even with the current woofer mismatch (an AE TD12S woofer is on backorder).
