Since the back surrounds in a 7.1 system are fed the same signal,
Your really talking 6.1 channels.
That said, I have tried 7.1 with movies and found almost no difference. With 6.1 music however, you are talking a great deal of difference. The six channels can all be fed whatever the recording engineer wants.
I'm having a new home built with a 14 x 20 theater room. I plan on having a 7.4 system. With the Three Pi speakers that Wayne Parham has designed, each Three Pi requires a flanking subwoofer. I will end up with 4 Three Pi speakers, maybe 6, and 4 subs, the rear subs will be in each corner. This is not to quadruple the bass, but spread it evenly.
My Pioneer receiver requires 7 speakers before I can switch to THX Music Mode, which I think will be awesome. With movies, there are very few 7.1 sound tracks. 7.1 can fake the two back channels, but I'm mainly interested in 7.1 for music.
