I like to avoid grilles when I can, because they create a reflection that makes self-interference and response ripple. That said, sometimes they're a necessary evil. I have a 4-year-old, so I'm running grilles right now.
For home hifi, I like to use a recessed framed grille because I think it looks good. Foam is also attractive, and can be attached with Velcro.
Another place I've installed them is at clubs, where I prefer a metal mesh, something like this:
