With a decent wire, making a good connection is the next most important thing to consider. Crummy connectors, Wire oxidation/corrosion, Banana jack screws that come loose are a few things that come to mind.

BTW, what 'looks' like a good connector can be deceiving. Gold plated jacks are sometimes plated after the underlying base metal pieces are assembled. The crimp connections are not gold plated.
