My latest budget favorite is the Art Array with a higher level crossover than the original version. The Art Array is a special purpose speaker: sensitive enough to be driven by an 8 watt SET amp, high impedance in the important bass frequencies, costs about $400 total (including all internal parts and enclosure materials) to build, easy-to-build enclosures.
